about

Tim Carman Trio plays jazz like it was supposed to be played: hot, sweaty, and a damn good time. Jazz doesn't have to be so academic. It can be a party. It doesn't have to be about playing a million complicated notes that only schooled musicians would enjoy. "I went in focusing on groove, sound, and simplicity," says bandleader/ drummer Tim Carman (who also plays drums in blues outfit GA-20). That's exactly what the listener gets from this Trio: straightforward grooves with a sound that blows the roof off the joint. Drawing inspiration from notables such as Big John Patton, Brother Jack McDuff, Babyface Willette, and Freddie Roach, TCT opens the door to a very special party that we're all invited to.

Today, Tim Carman Trio is happy to announce the first single off their forthcoming sophomore 12" LP "King Comfy." Being the first track off the album, "Chicken Noodle Man"—a nickname for his dog Augie— is the perfect prelude of what's to come and launches you straight into what TCT is all about. Ken Clark's screaming organ summons up the good Brother Jack McDuff's spirit for a hot session while Carman and guitarist Steve Fell help push this track to its funkiest. "Chicken Noodle Man" pays homage to the true essence of great jazz music, one that the aforementioned greats would be proud of. It's inviting, and the grooves are continuous. Rare in jazz today, for sure. Too many musicians are trying to recreate the sounds we've all heard over and over, but not creating the real sounds in an organic way. TCT does it differently. From the first few notes of "Chicken Noodle Man," you can hear this Trio doing a top-notch job of preserving a style and sound we all know and love while adding their own feel from start to finish.

"King Comfy" is set to be released July 2023 on F-Spot Records and will be available as a full-length 12" vinyl LP. Consisting of eight original songs and two covers, the entire record itself gives off the feel of any jazz club on the circuit during the late sixties or early seventies, but they're playing in your living room right here in the present day, and you've got a front row seat.

The Tim Carman Trio, formed in 2020 by Boston based drummer Tim Carman, is no-frills, timeless, B3 organ trio jazz. Inspired by 60s icons like Big John Patton, Jimmy Smith, Art Blakey, Roy Haynes, and Grant Green—Carman (drums), Clark (organ), and Fell (guitar) harken back to an age of honest, unpolished, musical interaction. ... more
